Our Projects for Refugees
Educational centre in Kakuma Refugee Camp
The SIR and SOURCE centre offers a range of education and career development programs for refugees from diverse age groups in coding, general education, digital literacy, female empowerment, and information technology, as well as a global mentorship program connecting students with technology professionals across the globe. The centre is entirely powered by renewable energy and constructed with recycled materials.
Computer Classrooms
Since 2017, SOURCE has directly funded, supplied or supported the construction of 7 classrooms in the Solidarity Initiative for Refugees (SIR) educational centre in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya.
In total, these classrooms have a combined monthly attendance of around 400 students, pursuing a variety of different educational programs aimed at refugees, including adults, teenagers and children.
All classrooms are constructed using recycled materials and powered by renewable energy.
Solidarity Initiative for Refugees (SIR)
Solidarity Initiative for Refugees (SIR) is a refugee-led organisation which was established in 2017 with sponsorship from SOURCE. SIR runs the daily operations of the centre through its highly skilled and multifaceted local team. Their mission is to support the communities in Kakuma Refugee Camp through innovative education programs, career development and advocacy efforts for refugees.
SOURCE is in constant communication with the SIR team to collaboratively manage the following tasks:
- Strategic development
- Classroom construction
- Logistics and operations
- Energy management
- MEAL (monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning)
- Fundraising strategy
- Partnership development
- Programme design and delivery
- Computers and classroom supplies
- Project management
- Financial reporting and budgeting
- Technology consulting
- Legal advice

SIR and SOURCE jointly provide a variety of educational programs and courses at the computer centre.

Mentorship Program for Refugees
The Mentorship program involves connecting students from SOURCE and SIR’s refugee education programs to technology professionals across the world. The purpose of this program is to enable skill-sharing, application of existing competencies, career progression and cultural learning.
Internet Café
In 2019, SIR rented out a space to enable computer services within Kakuma Refugee Camp through the support of SOURCE. The location provides services such as internet connectivity, computer access, printing, and scanning to support refugee education.
